NSW Pride Grind Out a 1-0 Win in Adelaide and Join the Hockey One Logjam on Nine Points

It wasn’t pretty, and it didn’t need to be. NSW Pride beat Adelaide Fire 1-0 in Adelaide on Saturday night, and that single goal was worth a place in the chasing pack.

The Pride came into the game on six points from three games, after Perth ended their unbeaten start last weekend. Adelaide came in still looking for a first win, having conceded 28 goals in their first three games. On paper it looked like a mismatch. On the turf it was a grind, and the Pride will be relieved as much as pleased to have got out of Adelaide with all three points.

The win moves the Pride to nine points from four games, level with Tassie Tigers and Canberra Chill. HC Melbourne still lead the way on 12 after four straight wins, but the gap behind them is now a three-way tie, and that’s a very different race to the one we had on Friday night.

For Adelaide, it’s another defeat and another game without a win, and the goals-against column keeps growing. They’ve now played four, lost four, and the Fire are running out of games to turn this season around. The Pride, meanwhile, bank three hard-earned points on the road, and that suddenly looks huge for their title hopes.

Perth Thundersticks close Round 4 against the Melbourne Cobras on Sunday in Perth. For our money, Melbourne are still the team to catch, but the Pride have just shown they can win ugly too, and teams that win ugly tend to stick around.
