Hockey One Weekend: Govers Goes for Four from Four as Tigers Meet the Blaze Again
Round 4 of Hockey One opened in Canberra on Friday night, and the weekend only gets better from there. Hobart on Saturday, Adelaide on Saturday night, Perth on Sunday. Three double-headers, six games that matter, and one goalscoring streak worth following all the way to South Australia.
Start in Hobart, where the Tassie Tigers host the Brisbane Blaze on Saturday at the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre. The women play at 1:00pm local time (7:00am PKT) and the men at 2:45pm local time (8:45am PKT). The men’s game has recent history written all over it. The last two times these sides met, neither could be separated in 60 minutes. Both games in 2025 were draws, and both went the Tigers’ way in a shootout, including a wild 6-6 semi-final. The Blaze arrive in form after a 10-1 win over the Fire, with seven different scorers and a first Hockey One goal for Cody Hale. The Tigers will want a response after Hayden Beltz’s two penalty corners were not enough to stop Canberra in a 4-3 loss. After three rounds the Tigers men sit third and the Blaze men fifth, so this one has real ladder movement in it. In the women’s game the Tigers are sixth and the Blaze seventh. The Tigers women lost 4-2 to Canberra despite two penalty corners from captain Penny Squibb, while the Blaze women picked up their first win of the season, 3-0 over the Fire, with Rosie Malone, Jamie-Lee Surha and Sara Strauss all scoring.
Then Adelaide, and the Blake Govers show. The Fire host NSW Pride at the State Hockey Centre on Saturday night, women at 5:30pm local time (12:00pm PKT) and men at 7:15pm local time (1:45pm PKT). Govers has scored in every game this season, three penalty corners for three goals, and his 45th Hockey One goal extended his own record even as Perth handed the Pride men their first loss. Another one in Adelaide makes it four from four. The Pride men will want to bounce back after Daykin Stanger’s double helped Perth to a 3-1 win in Sydney, ending their unbeaten start. Adelaide’s men are still searching for a first win, but Freddy Waters gave them an early lead in Brisbane last week and they will be desperate to turn that into more at home. The Pride men are fourth, the Fire men eighth. In the women’s game the Pride arrive after a narrow 3-2 loss to Perth, with Abby Wilson and Kendelle Tait scoring, and Adelaide’s women are still chasing their first win after a 3-0 loss in Brisbane. The women’s sides met for bronze last season, with the Pride winning 3-2. The Pride women are fifth, the Fire women eighth.
Sunday belongs to Perth. The Thundersticks finally play at home after three rounds on the road, hosting the Melbourne Cobras at Perth Hockey Stadium. The women play at 2:00pm local time (11:00am PKT) and the men at 3:45pm local time (12:45pm PKT). The women’s match is first against third, and it is the game of the weekend on paper. Perth are the only unbeaten women’s side after edging the Pride 3-2, with Courtney Schonell scoring and converting to take her season tally to five, the most in the women’s competition. The Cobras lost for the first time, 2-1 to HC Melbourne in the derby, despite Lahni Woodger’s opener. In the men’s game Perth are up and running after beating the Pride 3-1 in Sydney, with Stanger scoring and converting inside the first 12 minutes. The Cobras men arrive with plenty to build on despite losing the derby: Abu Mahmood scored a hat-trick against HC Melbourne, and they led 5-4 with six minutes to go. It is the first ever meeting between these two clubs. The Thundersticks women are first, the Cobras women third; the men are sixth and seventh.
Every match is streamed live and free on 7plus in Australia, and internationally via the Hockey One Global Pass. If you are picking one game to set an alarm for, make it Saturday night in Adelaide. Govers, a penalty corner, and a record that keeps growing. That is appointment viewing.
