India players celebrate at the Asian Games 2026

New Zealand’s Premier Hockey League Is Back: Four Weekends, Five Cities, a Christchurch Final, and India in the Middle of It

New Zealand’s elite domestic hockey competition is back, and it has a shape worth knowing before it starts. The Premier Hockey League, Aotearoa’s top domestic league, returns for 2026 with a four-weekend double-header format across five locations, four franchises, and a Grand Final in Christchurch on Saturday 12 December. Christchurch hosts the finals weekend for the first time, bringing the competition’s showpiece event to the Garden City.

The four franchises are the Central Falcons, the Hauraki Mavericks, the Northern Tridents and the Southern Alpiners, with close to 100 players in each competition. The defending champions are the Southern Alpiners in the men’s competition, who beat the Hauraki Mavericks 5-1 in last season’s final, and the Northern Tridents in the women’s competition, who beat the Central Falcons 3-2. The Falcons were the inaugural champions in both competitions back in 2020, so the history here is short but the rivalries are already real.

The timing has an extra layer this year. Between the PHL’s opening weekend and its second round, New Zealand host India in a three-Test series marking 100 years since the first hockey tour to New Zealand in 1926. The Vantage Black Sticks men play India on 19, 21 and 22 November at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Auckland, and PHL players are expected to feature, with the Black Sticks squad for the series already named. It’s a neat piece of scheduling: domestic form on show, then an international series, then back to the league run-in.

Franchise squads for the PHL itself were still to be announced when the format was revealed, with a mix of Black Sticks, experienced internationals and young talent promised across all four teams. That is the part to watch next. New Zealand’s domestic league exists to unearth the next Black Sticks, and a double-header format across five locations gives a lot of players a stage in a short space of time.

The finals are 12 December in Christchurch. Between now and then, there is a league to win and a centenary series to play. New Zealand hockey has a busy six weeks coming, and it starts at home.
