Perfect Amsterdam Host Bloemendaal in the Game That Tests the Hoofdklasse Leaders
Six games, six wins, 26 goals scored and six conceded. That is Amsterdam’s Hoofdklasse season so far, and on Sunday it runs into the first side that looks properly equipped to end it.
Amsterdam host Bloemendaal at the Wagener Stadium in Round 7. Bloemendaal sit third on 13 points, four wins, a draw and one defeat, with 21 goals scored. They are five points behind Amsterdam, and they are the last of the top four Amsterdam have to face in this first run of games. A home win stretches the lead to eight points and keeps the perfect record intact. A Bloemendaal win cuts it to two and blows the title race open before November is a week old.
Last season’s meetings say this will not be comfortable for either side. Amsterdam and Bloemendaal drew 2-2 at the Wagener, and Bloemendaal won the return 5-3. Bloemendaal have already shown they can score in bunches this season, putting nine past Schaerweijde, and they beat Rotterdam 3-1. Amsterdam’s own statement win was an 8-0 away win at Schaerweijde. Both sides have punished the bottom of the table. Sunday is about what happens when they meet each other.
The other game to watch is in Rotterdam, where the defending champions host Oranje-Rood. Rotterdam’s title defence has stuttered badly: seventh place, six points from six games, 18 scored and 18 conceded. They lost 4-3 to Den Bosch and 4-3 to Amsterdam, and they have not looked like champions yet. Oranje-Rood, by contrast, are unbeaten in five games, 13 points, and a win in Rotterdam takes them level with second-placed Den Bosch on 16 points, with a game still in hand.
That is the shape of the league after six rounds. Amsterdam clear at the top on 18. Den Bosch second on 16. Bloemendaal and Oranje-Rood on 13, Oranje-Rood with the extra game to play. Then a gap to Kampong on 10, and Rotterdam down in seventh, already 12 points off the pace. The play-off race and the title race are the same conversation right now, and Sunday decides how tight it stays.
For our money, Amsterdam’s defence is the difference. Six goals conceded in six games, in a league averaging more than four goals a game, is a serious number. Bloemendaal will score, most teams do against everyone else, but keeping Amsterdam to one or two is a different job. If Amsterdam score first at the Wagener, the perfect record survives. If Bloemendaal get in front early, we find out what this Amsterdam side are made of when they have to chase.
