Punjab, Odisha and Tamil Nadu Are All in the Race for the 2030 Men’s Hockey World Cup
The race for the 2030 Hockey World Cups just got a lot clearer, and Punjab is right in it.
Hockey India secretary general Bholanath Singh has confirmed that three states are chasing the men’s tournament: Punjab, Odisha and Tamil Nadu. “Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Punjab are all in the race,” he said. “If Punjab gets the Hockey World Cup, it will be a big achievement for the state. Odisha will be the first preference, although the hosting rights have not been confirmed.”
That’s the honest position. Nothing is decided yet. But Punjab’s case is stronger than it’s ever been, and the timing isn’t a coincidence.
Punjab is hosting international hockey for the first time in 17 years right now, with the men’s Asian Champions Trophy in Jalandhar and Mohali. Singh said players, including captain Harmanpreet Singh, have told him repeatedly that their parents had never watched them play an international match in Punjab, despite careers spent all over the world. That stuck with him.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has already offered to host the 2030 World Cup, and Singh says he has given his word that he will push for it. “I would make every effort to bring the tournament to Punjab,” he said. The last international hockey event in the state was the Gold Cup in 2009. For a state that produces so much of India’s team, that’s a long wait.
The competition is serious, though. Odisha has hosted the men’s World Cup twice, in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, and knows exactly how to stage one. Tamil Nadu staged the Men’s Junior World Cup in Chennai and Madurai last year. Punjab is the romantic pick and the emotional one. Odisha is the safe pair of hands. That tension will decide this.
Bihar is the name to watch there. Singh confirmed that “Bihar had received the letter” for the 2030 Women’s World Cup, after hosting the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in 2024 and the Men’s Asia Cup in 2025. Singh’s stated aim is to see both World Cups hosted in India, following the model of this year’s joint Netherlands-Belgium staging.
His wider point is worth hearing. Taking tournaments to new states isn’t just about spreading games around, he said. It’s about building infrastructure of international standard in places that have never had it. Punjab this week, Bhopal next month, Bihar in 2030. That’s the pattern, and it’s deliberate.
For our money, Odisha starting as first preference doesn’t end the argument. Punjab has the story, the crowds this week, and a chief minister offering to host. The next move belongs to the FIH, and the bidding process will tell us how real each state’s case is.
