India players celebrate at the Asian Games 2026

India Hockey: Eighth in the World and Building Towards LA 2028

Eighth. Both of them.

In the FIH rankings update of 31 August 2026, India’s men sit eighth in the world on 3,072 points. India’s women sit eighth too, on 2,938. It’s a symmetrical position, and an honest one: both teams are in the chasing pack behind the European and South American heavyweights, close enough to the elite to believe, far enough away to know the work isn’t done. The next two years decide whether India arrive in Los Angeles as contenders or outsiders. The build starts now.

The women have already made their move

India’s women have taken the biggest step so far. They won the 2026 FIH Nations Cup, beating New Zealand 2-0 in the final in Auckland, and that title carried promotion to the FIH Pro League for 2026-27. From 8 December 2026, they’ll play a full season against Argentina, Australia, Belgium, China, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Spain. There’s no better preparation for an Olympic cycle than that fixture list. The men’s Pro League season, meanwhile, includes a home block in India in February 2027.

Home turf, this month

The immediate focus is closer to home. India host the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy from 27 October to 5 November 2026, with the league stage in Jalandhar and the semi-finals and final in Mohali. As listed in host-side reporting, the six teams are India, Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea and Bangladesh. For India’s men, it’s a chance to win a continental title in front of home crowds and build some momentum before the Pro League arrives.

One honest note for fans waiting on the Hockey India League. Hockey India has said the next edition is planned for December 2026 to January 2027, but fixtures haven’t been announced yet and the edition isn’t confirmed. SportsCursor will publish HIL dates only when Hockey India does.

The kids are coming through

The future is arriving on schedule. India’s junior men won the Men’s Junior Asia Cup in Moqi, China, in September 2026, beating Korea 4-1 in the final, and they’ve qualified for the expanded 24-team Junior World Cup in 2027. India sit fourth in the FIH junior men’s world rankings, and the junior women have qualified for their 2027 Junior World Cup too. Eighth in the world today. The aim, clearly, is much higher by 2028, and SportsCursor will follow the build-up tournament by tournament.
