250 and Counting: Harmanpreet’s Milestone Goal Powers India Into the ACT Final

Some goals are just goals. This one had a number attached that Indian hockey will remember.

Harmanpreet Singh’s ninth-minute strike against South Korea on Wednesday was his 250th senior international goal. Hockey India marked it straight after the game, calling him “Sarpanch Sahab” and hailing another milestone in a remarkable journey. It came in an 8-1 semifinal win at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali, and it sent India into Thursday’s Asian Champions Trophy final against Japan.

The goal itself was pure Harmanpreet. India were already ahead through Shilanand Lakra’s fourth-minute opener, and the captain stepped up and did what he has done for a decade now. Lakra scored twice in the opening 13 minutes, Dilpreet Singh added two more, and Angad Bir Singh and Vivek Sagar Prasad were also on target as India built a 6-1 half-time lead and never looked back.

The 250 puts Harmanpreet second on India’s all-time scoring list, behind only the great Dhyan Chand on 570. He went past Balbir Singh Sr’s mark of 246 during the tournament itself, with a hat-trick in Sunday’s 4-2 win over Malaysia. Ten goals in this tournament alone, and counting. For a drag-flicker who also runs the defence and wears the captain’s armband, that is some return.

What makes it more impressive is the timing. This is a captain leading a side that has barely put a foot wrong all tournament. India won all five league games, scored 34 goals in them, then put eight past Korea twice in four days, 8-0 in the league stage and 8-1 in the semifinal. Harmanpreet has been at the heart of all of it.

Thursday’s final is a shot at a sixth Asian Champions Trophy title, which would stretch India’s own record. Japan stand in the way, and they will have noted exactly who scored in the league meeting between these sides. India beat Japan 4-1 in the league stage. Harmanpreet scored in that one too.
