India players celebrate at the Asian Games 2026

Murugappa Gold Cup Day 2: Railways Win Their Opener, BPCL Hit Five, and an Eight-Goal Thriller Closes the Night

Three games, 17 goals, and not a dull one among them. Day 2 of the 97th Murugappa Gold Cup in Chennai delivered the lot: the defending champions winning ugly, a five-goal statement, and a comeback that had no business happening.

Indian Railways 2, Indian Army 1. The champions are up and running. Lovepreet Singh’s 12th-minute penalty corner put Railways ahead, Ankush levelled for the Army in the 28th, and Yogember Rawat settled it in the 57th. That’s three points from the opener for the side chasing a fourth straight Murugappa title, and a second game without a win for the Army after Thursday’s 1-1 with Karnataka. Champions don’t always sparkle in openers. They just win them.

BPCL 5, Tamil Nadu 1. The result of the day, and a brutal one for the hosts. Devindar Walmiki opened it from a penalty corner in the 4th minute, Mandeep Singh made it two a minute later, and by the time Subhan Abid added a fourth in the 24th, Tamil Nadu were chasing shadows. Muthukumar pulled one back in the 49th, Charanjeet Singh restored the four-goal cushion in the 54th, and Mandeep completed his brace in the 57th. Tamil Nadu have now conceded nine in two games after Thursday’s 4-4 with SAI-NCOE. Entertaining? Very. Sustainable? Not even slightly.

Indian Oil 4, Punjab National Bank 4. The nightcap, and the game of the tournament so far. PNB were 4-1 up and cruising: Gursimran Singh’s 21st-minute corner cancelled Gurjinder Singh’s opener, then Ingalemba Luwang, Sanjay and Abhimanyu struck in a nine-minute blitz either side of the break. Four-one, game over. Except it wasn’t. Gazee Khan started the fightback in the 37th, Gurjinder converted his second corner of the night a minute later, and Sunil Yadav held his nerve from the penalty spot in the 57th to complete the most unlikely of comebacks. PNB will feel like they lost two points. They did.

Where the pools stand

Two rounds in, and the picture is taking shape. In Pool A, Railways sit top with three points from one game, the Army have one from two, Karnataka one from one, and IOC and PNB one each from their draw. Pool B is messier: BPCL lead it after one game, SAI-NCOE and Tamil Nadu have a point apiece, and Tamil Nadu’s goal difference is already a problem.

The semi-finals are on 31 October, the final under lights on 1 November. Ten teams, two pools, top two go through. On tonight’s evidence, nobody’s getting through quietly.
