Decider Day in Johor: Japan Must Beat Pakistan to Reach the Final
This is what the whole week has been building to. Japan against Pakistan, 2:05 pm PKT, with a place in Saturday’s final on the line. Win and you’re in. Lose and you’re playing for bronze. And for Pakistan, even a draw is enough.
The maths is simple. Pakistan and Japan both have six points, both have a goal difference of +8, and Pakistan’s 16 goals scored beats Japan’s 14. So a draw keeps Pakistan ahead of Japan on goals-for. Japan have to win, full stop. Anything else and they’re out.
Malaysia, on nine points, are already in Saturday’s final in every scenario — a Japan win would only drop the hosts to second seed on goal difference. They’ll be watching this one as nervously as anyone.
Japan arrive in form and saying the right things. Their federation’s official account confirmed the 4-1 win over China that set this up, a hat-trick for S. Sasaki (27′, 50′, 55′) plus one for H. Sasaki (52′), China’s Li replying at 54′. Two wins, one defeat, and the knowledge that only three points will do. That’s a dangerous team.
Pakistan’s problem isn’t form, it’s discipline. Rana Waleed saw red in the 51st minute of the 3-2 defeat to Malaysia, at one late phase Pakistan were down to eight on the pitch (per the Malaysia coach), and Ghulam Mustafa and Asam Haider also picked up cards late on. Whether Waleed is available today wasn’t confirmed by anyone at the time of writing, and that’s a genuine selection headache for Syed Hussain against a side that has to come out swinging.
After the decider, Malaysia face Canada at 4:35 pm PKT in the day’s second game. Canada are locked into the bronze-medal match whatever happens, which makes it a free hit for them and a tune-up for the hosts.
Our take
Pakistan have the easier equation but the harder game. Japan know exactly what they need and they’ve got the firepower to chase it. For our money, the first 15 minutes decide this: if Pakistan survive Japan’s opening storm, the draw starts to feel inevitable. If Japan score early, it gets very loud in Johor Bahru.
