Vienna Derby on Saturday: Arminen v AHTC Opens Austria’s Big Weekend Live on ORF
Austria doesn’t get many column inches in the hockey press, which is a shame, because its top end is better than people think. Saturday lunchtime is a good time to check: SV Arminen host AHTC Wien in the Vienna derby at the Hockeystadion, and it’s live on ORF SPORT+.
AHTC announced the fixture on their official men’s account: Saturday 24 October, 12:00 start in Vienna. Derbies in a small league carry weight beyond the points, because these two meet each other in every competition going, and both squads are built around the core of the Austrian national team, the side that tops the FIH indoor world rankings and keeps punching above its size outdoors.
Why Arminen matter this season
Arminen are the Austrian side in the Euro Hockey League’s new FINAL12. At Easter they’ll face hosts Oranje-Rood in Eindhoven, with Waterloo Ducks waiting for the winner. That’s the level now expected of the Viennese club, and it makes their domestic form worth following: every Bundesliga result between now and March is really an audition for that Eindhoven weekend.
A derby against AHTC, at home, on national TV, is the kind of game that tells you where a squad actually is. Win it well and the FINAL12 talk feels justified. Lose it and the questions start early.
Saturday, 12:00 in Vienna. If you’re in Austria, it’s on ORF SPORT+. If you’re not, the result will be on SportsCursor with the rest of the European weekend.
The draw in full: EHL Finals 2027 at Oranje-Rood, plus today’s EHL opening round in Eindhoven and where Austria sit in the Rankings.
