The ACC Race Is Down to Arithmetic: Nine Teams, One Weekend That Moves Everything
Nobody in the ACC can relax now. Not even the good teams.
ACC Nation’s latest power picture, published on Wednesday, has nine ACC programmes sitting inside the national RPI top 25: Duke at 6, Wake Forest at 7, Virginia at 10, North Carolina at 11, Syracuse at 15, Cal at 18, Boston College at 19, Louisville at 22 and Stanford at 25. Last year, five ACC teams made the NCAA tournament. The question hanging over the last two weekends is whether this year brings more, or whether the conference starts eating itself.
Friday is where it moves
This Friday’s card is built to shuffle things: Louisville at Virginia, Cal at Boston College, Stanford at Syracuse, and the big one, Wake Forest at North Carolina.
Wake at Carolina is the game with real teeth. North Carolina have owned this conference, winning it every year from 2017 through 2025 in ACC Nation’s telling, and they’re the side everyone else’s seeding gets measured against. Wake Forest, sitting higher in the RPI right now, go there knowing a road win changes their whole November.
Saturday keeps the squeeze on: Stanford at Boston College, Cal at Syracuse, and Duke travelling to Liberty, who sit 12th in the NFHCA poll. Cross-conference, ranked opponent, away from home. Duke’s RPI won’t forgive a slip there.
The dates that matter
The ACC Championship runs 3, 4 and 6 November at Chapel Hill. The NCAA Championship closes the season on 20–22 November at Trager Stadium in Louisville.
Between here and there, it’s finesse, as ACC Nation put it. Win the right games and the RPI does your arguing for you in the selection room. Lose the wrong one, to the wrong rival, and nine teams inside the top 25 turns into a very crowded bubble.
Our read: the top three in the RPI are safe enough. Teams four through seven are playing for their postseason lives this weekend, whether the bracket says so or not. Thursday’s No. 1 v No. 2 showdown is the other college game that matters this week.
