India players celebrate at the Asian Games 2026

Opening Night in Raipur: Chhattisgarh Hockey League Starts Tonight, and It’s All Live on JioHotstar

The speeches are done. Tonight, Raipur actually plays hockey.

The Chhattisgarh Hockey League had its opening ceremony at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Hockey Stadium on Wednesday, with Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao and Union Minister of State Raksha Khadse in attendance alongside league ambassador Sardar Singh. Khadse called the league a platform that will push young talent through, and pointed at India’s Asian Games golds as the moment hockey’s stock rose across the country.

Fine words. From 7:30 pm IST tonight (7:00 pm PKT), Rajdhani Royals against Nyayadhani Knights has to back them up.

How the opening night runs

There’s a women’s exhibition match first at 5:30 pm IST, then the league opener at 7:30. Every match of the tournament streams live on JioHotstar, the league’s official streaming partner, with commentary in Hindi and Chhattisgarhi. For a first-year state league, that’s not a small detail. A kid in Bilaspur with a phone can watch the same feed as anyone in Raipur, and that’s rather the point of the whole project.

The structure underneath is worth repeating because it’s the smart bit. Each of the six squads carries 22 players: 18 from Chhattisgarh and four with national or international experience, per the state sports department. The local kids aren’t mascots in this league. They’re most of the roster, learning next to Olympians like Surender Kumar, SV Sunil and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay instead of watching them on a screen.

What to watch for this week

Eighteen matches in eleven days is a sprint, not a season. Two games a night, semi-finals on 31 October, final on 1 November, no time for anyone to play themselves into form.

Royals v Knights tonight, then Mainpat Titans v Bailadila Bulls and Chakradhar Champions v Sanskardhani Strikers on Friday. By Sunday night the table will already have a shape, and one of the six will be in early trouble.

Our take? Judge this league on the local names, not the marquee ones. If a Chhattisgarh teenager is deciding games by the second weekend, the experiment has worked before a trophy is even lifted. The league launch story has the full format, and Chennai’s Murugappa Gold Cup starts today too.
