Malaysia Can Rotate, Canada Can’t Relax: Friday’s Other Johor Game Still Has a Point

On paper, Friday’s late game is the dead one. Malaysia v Canada, 4:35 pm PKT, and the hosts are already in Saturday’s final whatever happens.

Look closer, though. Both benches have a job to do here, they’re just very different jobs.

Malaysia’s job: get to Saturday in one piece

Coach Nor Saiful Zaini said it plainly after the Pakistan win. All 18 of his players will keep rotating, nobody sits unless they’re injured, and the Canada game is not the main focus. The final is. He doesn’t want tired legs or fresh knocks carried out of a back-to-back.

Adam Asyraf Johari and captain Nabil Yusof are the two he named as possible rests if minor muscle strains need it. Everyone else plays some part. That’s not a weakened Malaysia, by the way. This squad has won three straight comeback games with different players popping up each night. The depth is kind of the point of them.

Canada’s job: the bronze game starts here

Canada can’t reach the final. Three points, one win, and a goal difference that took a beating early in the week settled that. But Saturday still holds a bronze-medal game for them, almost certainly against whoever loses the Japan-Pakistan shoot-out earlier on Friday, and seeding and pride are both live in this one.

Their week’s been a slow build. Hammered early, they beat China 3-2 on Tuesday for their first win, the kind of result a young group building towards the 2027 Junior World Cup actually learns from. Field Hockey Canada billed this tournament as a measuring stick against Asian sides ranked in their range, and a competitive showing against the hosts, even a rotated hosts, would be their best evidence yet that the gap is closing.

For our money, Canada make this awkward for 40 minutes and Malaysia’s bench wins it late. That’s been the hosts’ pattern all week: suffer a bit, then score when the other side’s legs go.

Whatever happens, by full-time we’ll know Saturday’s full card: final at 5:05 pm PKT, bronze game at 2:05 pm PKT. Friday’s early game — the shoot-out — picks Malaysia’s opponents. This one picks Canada’s.
