LIVE: Pakistan vs Canada — Day 2 at the Sultan of Johor Cup 2026

No rest at this tournament. A day after opening against China, Pakistan’s under-21s are back on the pitch in Johor Bahru, this time against Canada.

Pakistan v Canada. Taman Daya Hockey Stadium. Push-back at 2:05 pm Pakistan time on Sunday. We’ll be updating this page through the match, so keep it open.

Day 1 went Pakistan’s way — eventually. They were 3-1 down to China inside 25 minutes, then scored seven straight to win 8-3. Canada had a rougher start: Japan beat them 8-1, and it was 5-0 by half-time. So both sides come into this one with a game in their legs and no extra rest — but in very different moods.

Sunday’s fixtures

  • Pakistan v Canada — 2:05 pm PKT
  • Malaysia v China — 4:35 pm PKT

Hosts Malaysia play their first match of the tournament in the second game, against a China side playing its second game in two days.

Why Canada are awkward opponents

Canada don’t play like the Asian sides Pakistan face most of the year. They’re physical, they run hard, and this squad has been built patiently toward the 2027 Junior World Cup.

They’ve named an 18-player roster for Johor, coached by Koen Bakhuis: Rajan Bahi, Gurnoor Bhullar, Gurwinder Brar, Gauthier Callewaert, Josiah Campbell, Navdip Chandi, Caleb Fitch, Morgan Garside, Aidan Gaunt-Edwards, Abhijeet Gill, Samuel Hoad, Paramdev Hundal, Gursehaj Johal, Lachlan Scobbie, Abiram Yogeshwaran, Kale Simonson, Ryan McKibbin and Gavin Thind. Most are based at Canadian clubs, with a small European-based contingent in Brussels and England.

Campbell’s an interesting one. He’s already played a Junior World Cup and the Junior Pan Ams, and Canada’s own preview quoted him saying the Asian teams here, Pakistan included, play at a pace and with a technical level Canada don’t see at home. That’s the test Pakistan set them on Sunday, if Pakistan’s corners and counter-attacks click.

Pakistan’s squad

Same registration as Day 1. Captain Muhammad Ammad leads the side, Syed Hussain is head coach and Ayaz Mahmood is team manager.

Goalkeepers: Ahsan Mahmood (1), Ihtesham Muhammad (12)

Defenders: Asam Haider (2), Muhammad Farooq (13), Sami Ullah (14), Usman Ghani (16), Ali Ansar (27), Ali Hamza (44)

Midfielders: Rana Abdul Sami (8), Muhammad Shaheer (10), Muhammad Yahya Najeeb (17), Saif Ullah (19), Fayyaz Hamza (24)

Forwards: Ghulam Mustafa (7), Adeel (11), Waleed Rana (22), Muhammad Usman (91), Muhammad Ammad (35, captain)

What comes after Sunday

  • Tue 20 Oct: Canada v China 2:05 pm PKT, Japan v Malaysia 4:35 pm PKT (no Pakistan match, coverage continues)
  • Wed 21 Oct: China v Japan 2:05 pm PKT, Pakistan v Malaysia 4:35 pm PKT
  • Fri 23 Oct: Japan v Pakistan 2:05 pm PKT, Malaysia v Canada 4:35 pm PKT
  • Sat 24 Oct: 3rd-place match 2:05 pm PKT, final 5:05 pm PKT

The top four in this five-team league reach Saturday’s medal matches. With only four league games each, a second win on Sunday puts Pakistan in a very strong spot. A slip, and Wednesday against the hosts becomes must-win territory.
