China v Bangladesh Again on Wednesday, This Time With Fifth Place at Stake
They could not be separated on Monday, so they get to do it all again on Wednesday. China and Bangladesh meet in Mohali on 4 November at 1:30pm Pakistan time in the Asian Champions Trophy fifth-place playoff, just two days after their 1-1 draw in Jalandhar.
That draw settled the placings. China finished fifth in the league stage on two points, Bangladesh sixth on one, and the playoff is the rematch neither side wanted to be in but both sides now need. Both are still hunting a first win of the tournament. China have drawn their last two games, against Japan and Bangladesh, without winning either. Bangladesh have one point and two goals from five games, and their first point came on Monday.
It is a strange kind of final for two winless teams. There is no trophy, no semi-final place, just fifth against sixth and the chance to leave Punjab with a win. But after five games of chasing one, that will feel like plenty. The team that wins on Wednesday goes home able to say they finished fifth in Asia. The team that loses goes home last.
The playoff opens Wednesday’s action in Mohali before the semi-finals at 4:00pm and 6:30pm Pakistan time. The bronze medal match and the final follow on Thursday. For China and Bangladesh, though, Wednesday afternoon is their final, and Monday proved there is nothing between them.
