Korea’s 5-0 Win Over Bangladesh, Scorers Confirmed: Son’s Hat-Trick and Park’s Double
We knew the score. Now we know who scored it. South Korea’s 5-0 win over Bangladesh in Jalandhar on Sunday was built on a hat-trick from Son Da-in and two penalty corners from Park Geun-woo, and the details make an already impressive win look even better.
Park opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 7th minute, and Son added a field goal in the 17th to make it 2-0 at half-time. That was the platform. Son struck again in the 32nd minute, Park converted his second penalty corner in the 34th, and Son completed his hat-trick with a field goal in the 51st minute. Five goals, three from open play, two from corners, and a clean sheet at the other end. That’s a complete performance.
It was Korea’s second win in a row, and it took them to six points from four games and into the semi-finals. The turnaround is worth spelling out. Korea started this tournament with back-to-back defeats, 3-2 to Japan and 3-1 to Malaysia, and looked gone. Then came the comeback win over China, 2-1 from a goal down, and now this. That’s a team finding form at exactly the right time.
For Bangladesh, the numbers make grim reading. Four defeats, one goal scored all tournament, and now they are out of the semi-final race. Their one goal came from Amirul Islam against Malaysia. Monday’s game against China is about pride and a first point, nothing more.
Korea’s reward for the turnaround is the toughest assignment in the tournament. They finish the league stage against hosts India on Monday at 6:30pm Pakistan time in Jalandhar. India have won all four games, scored 26 goals, and have Harmanpreet Singh on eight goals for the tournament. Win that one and Korea go to Mohali with real momentum. Lose it, and they still go to Mohali, but the semi-final draw gets a lot harder. After Sunday, though, nobody will be writing them off.
