England Hockey: Universities, Old Clubs and the Road to a Home Euros
Universities that churn out internationals. Old clubs that never stop competing. English hockey is built on those two pillars, and the next two years put both of them on show.
The numbers first. England’s men are seventh in the FIH world rankings on 3,431 points, and England’s women are seventh too, on 3,044. Top eight in both games, then, and with a home European Championships on the horizon to aim at.
Students, clubs, and a top flight with room for both
The domestic engine is the England Hockey League, whose Premier Division is the top tier of a multi-division national league: 12 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams.
The 2026–27 season opened on 26 September 2026, and it arrived with fresh stories. The University of Exeter and Bowdon are both new to the men’s top flight this season. One’s a university side, one’s an old club, and both routes still lead to the top. That’s the English game in a sentence.
One wrinkle worth knowing
In the FIH Pro League and at the Olympics, England’s players compete as Great Britain. So it’s Great Britain who take England’s place in the men’s Pro League 2026–27, and there’s a GB women’s team in the league too. The Pro League season runs from 8 December 2026 to 27 June 2027.
London 2027 is the big one
The biggest date of all is at home. England host the EuroHockey Championships from 28 July to 8 August 2027, expanded to 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams. Pool games and quarter-finals are at Lee Valley, and the semi-finals and finals at Twickenham Stoop.
The prize isn’t just a trophy, either. The winners qualify directly for the LA 2028 Olympics. A home Euros with Olympic places on the line doesn’t need selling, and SportsCursor will build towards it in the Countries section all season.
