Police Edge Guangdong 7-6 in Lahore as China’s Tour Ends in a 13-Goal Thriller
Thirteen goals in the last game of the tour. Pakistan Police beat Guangdong 7-6 at the DHA Hockey Stadium in Lahore on Thursday, closing out the Chinese side’s visit to Pakistan in the most open match of the whole trip.
The match was organised by the Pakistan Hockey Federation as the finale of Guangdong’s tour. Punjab Inspector General Abdul Karim attended as chief guest, alongside hockey legends Shehbaz Ahmed Senior, Tahir Zaman, Khawaja Junaid and Manzoor Ul Hassan. That guest list tells you how the PHF wanted this one framed: not just another departmental fixture, but the send-off for a tour that has run the length of the country.
Guangdong fly home on Friday, and they leave with one win from seven matches. The win came against Army, 4-2 in a shootout, in Rawalpindi. Every other stop went the other way. Mari Energies beat them 5-2 in the opener in Rawalpindi. Navy won 3-1 in Islamabad, Noman Janjua scoring twice. Customs won 3-2 in Lahore. Rangers won 3-1 in Narowal, in front of a big crowd, with goals from Muhammad Sami, Aamir Sohail and Muhammad Hammad. And Pakistan’s juniors beat them 5-2 in Gojra on Wednesday.
The 7-6 scoreline fits the pattern of the tour in one way: Guangdong scored goals everywhere they went, and still kept losing. They scored in every match on the trip, including two in Gojra and one in normal time against Army, plus four more in the shootout they won there. What they could not do was keep the other end shut. Police scored seven, the most any side managed against them on the tour, and that is the number that will stick.
For Pakistan’s departmental sides, the tour did what the PHF wanted it to do. Seven competitive games against a touring Chinese provincial side, spread across Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Narowal and Gojra, with crowds turning out and young players getting a look at international opposition. The Gojra game gave the juniors their moment. The Lahore finale gave Police theirs.
What comes next for Guangdong is a flight home. What comes next for the PHF is the question the tour was really about: whether this kind of visit becomes a regular fixture, and whether the departmental sides that beat Guangdong can carry that form into whatever domestic hockey follows.
The 7-6 scoreline was reported in a video report of the match; no scorers were named.
