Big Ten Friday: Four Games, One Afternoon, and the Tournament Seeds Still to Settle

The Big Ten does things the dramatic way. Four conference games, one Friday afternoon, and the regular season is done by dinnertime. Friday 30 October decides who goes where in the Big Ten Tournament, and the only seeds already settled are the top two.

Northwestern have the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye locked up. The Wildcats clinched a share of the Big Ten title with a 2-1 win over Rutgers on Sunday, they’re 6-0 in conference play, and they’ve now won 34 straight regular-season conference games. That’s not a typo. Their last defeat in the league is a long way in the rear-view mirror. They finish the regular season at Penn State on Friday afternoon, and Penn State are the team with the most to play for in that game. The Nittany Lions can still finish anywhere from the No. 3 seed to the No. 5 seed, which is the difference between a kind draw and a hard one in Columbus next week. Northwestern, for their part, have already shown what they do to the best teams in the league. They beat No. 1 Maryland 4-2 at home last week, Olivia Bent-Cole scoring a hat-trick, including two goals in the fourth quarter, after Maryland had led 2-1. Bent-Cole was named NFHCA Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday. Penn State will need something special to beat a side in this kind of form.

Maryland have the No. 2 seed locked up, and they close at home against No. 9 Iowa at 1:00pm ET, streamed on B1G+. The Terrapins are 15-1 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten, and they bounced back from the Northwestern defeat by winning 1-0 at No. 13 Indiana on Sunday, Babs van Hest scoring the only goal. Iowa are 12-3 and 4-3 in the league, and they sit in the group fighting for the middle seeds. Maryland have scored 52 goals this season from 14 different players, and van Hest and Francisca Eschoyez share the team lead with nine goals each. Iowa won’t be overawed. They’ve won enough big games this season to know they belong in this company. But Maryland at home, with the No. 2 seed already banked and a tournament to prepare for, are still the team to beat on Friday.

The other two games matter just as much, in different ways. Indiana visit Rutgers at 12:00pm ET, the first game of the day, with both sides sitting at 4-2 in the league before the weekend’s games and both fighting for a top-four seed. Indiana lost 1-0 to Maryland on Sunday, their third straight defeat after winning four in a row at home, and they need to stop the slide before the tournament starts. Rutgers, who pushed Northwestern to 2-1 on Sunday, will fancy their chances at home.

And then there’s the last game of the day, Ohio State at Michigan at 5:00pm ET, which is as simple as it gets. Winner takes the No. 7 seed, the final place in the Big Ten Tournament. Loser goes home, along with Michigan State, who finished 0-8 in the league. Everything else on Friday is about seeding. This one is about survival.

The Big Ten Tournament runs from 5 to 8 November in Columbus, Ohio. By Friday night, all nine teams will know exactly where they stand. Northwestern and Maryland already know. Everyone else finds out the hard way, in one afternoon.
