Hockey Heads to Dakar: Hockey5s Takes Centre Stage at the Youth Olympic Games on 4 November

Hockey is going to Africa’s first Olympic event, and it’s going in its fastest, smallest form. The FIH has confirmed its Hockey Focus Day at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games for Wednesday 4 November at Place du Souvenir in Dakar. Hockey5s is one of ten featured engagement sports at the Games, and the plan is simple: put a court in front of thousands of young people and let them play.

FIH president Tayyab Ikram called Dakar 2026 a historic milestone, the first Olympic sporting event ever hosted on African soil. He said presenting hockey in its Hockey5s format fits the Olympic mission of unity, hope and inspiring future generations, and that giving young people a first taste of the sport in an energetic, inclusive setting could act as a catalyst for grassroots growth across Africa.

Big words, but the setup backs them up. This isn’t a one-day exhibition that packs up and leaves. A purpose-built 10m x 15m Hockey5s court at Place du Souvenir is open daily throughout the Games, from 1 to 14 November, completely free. School workshops run from 09:30 to 15:30, introducing local students to the basics. Public sessions follow from 16:00 to 18:00, open to visitors, families and anyone curious, with no registration needed. And there’s a legacy piece already in place: FIKAGEAR has gifted a full set of official Hockey5s rebound boards to the Senegal Hockey Association, delivered through its partnership with the FIH Academy, so the court setup stays in Senegal after the Games end.

England and Great Britain international Darcy Bourne will be there as an official Athlete Role Model, selected by the International Olympic Committee. She’ll mentor young participants, share what life at the top of international hockey looks like, and lead interactive sessions through the celebration. Bourne told Olympics.com she’d been obsessed with the Olympics forever and called the role an honour, adding that working with young people had given her energy, joy and faith in humanity. “You can make such an impact in their lives just in small doses,” she said. “You remember someone that you met who was inspiring and gave you belief in something when you were young. And I hope that if we do that, we can improve the future.”

Every session will be run by certified FIH Academy Leads and Educators alongside local coaches from Senegal’s National Field Hockey Committee, all of whom have gone through specialised FIH Academy Educator training for Dakar 2026. That’s the part that matters most. A court, a famous face and a fun afternoon are great. Coaches who know how to teach the game, in Senegal, after everyone flies home, are what turn a festival into a hockey country.
