How to Watch the Asian Champions Trophy: JioStar, Star Sports 2 and JioHotstar for the Rest of the Tournament
No more guessing where to find it. Hockey India has confirmed how to watch the Asian Champions Trophy, and with a full week of hockey still to come, it’s worth knowing now.
JioStar is the tournament’s official broadcast partner. Matches go out on Star Sports 2 on television and on JioHotstar for streaming, Hockey India announced, with the FIH carrying the confirmation on Tuesday. It’s the ninth edition of the tournament, six teams, Jalandhar for the league stage and Mohali for the semis and medal games.
That’s a straightforward answer to the question every tournament throws up in its first week. And it matters more than usual here, because this one is being played in front of free crowds in Punjab, in a city hosting its first international tournament, and the television audience is how most fans will actually see it.
Here’s what the rest of the week looks like. Wednesday is a rest day, the first of three built into the schedule. Thursday brings three games: Malaysia against South Korea at 2:00pm PKT, Bangladesh against Japan at 4:15pm PKT, and India against China at 6:30pm PKT. India’s other league games follow the same evening pattern: Japan on Friday, Malaysia on Sunday and South Korea on Monday, all at 6:30pm PKT. The semifinals are in Mohali on 4 November, with the medal games on 5 November.
Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey put it simply. Having JioStar on board, he said, will take the tournament to a wider audience, and the fans will tune in and enjoy the best of Asian hockey. Secretary general Bhola Nath Singh made the same point from the practical side: television and streaming together mean convenient access wherever fans are, and a partnership that helps connect more people with the sport.
India go in as the team to beat, and nobody in the camp is pretending otherwise. They’re defending champions, chasing a sixth title and a third in a row, and they arrive fresh from defending their Asian Games gold. Captain Harmanpreet Singh said on the eve of the tournament that every team is here to win and none will be taken lightly. He’ll have to lead them without Manpreet Singh, ruled out with a calf injury, with Vivek Sagar Prasad called in.
Day one is already in the books, with Malaysia edging China 5-4 and Japan beating South Korea 3-2 in two thrillers before the hosts took the pitch. For our money, the broadcast deal is good news and the tournament’s real test runs through the rest of this week. Watch Thursday, then judge the rest from there.
