Canada U21 men's action at the Sultan of Johor Cup

Shinohara Scores Four as Japan Thrash Canada 5-0 for Johor Cup Bronze

Japan didn’t leave anything to chance in the bronze-medal match. They beat Canada 5-0 at Taman Daya on Saturday afternoon, and the game was basically done by half-time.

Ryosuke Shinohara scored four of them. He opened the scoring in the 4th minute, Tatsuaki Yasui made it 2-0 in the 9th, and Shinohara added a third in the 15th. Canada had no answer in the second quarter either, and Shinohara finished the job with two more in the 55th and 56th minutes. All five goals were field goals, which tells you how much of the game Japan spent camped in Canada’s circle.

It also settled the tournament’s scoring race. Shinohara finished with five goals, clear at the top, ahead of Japan’s Shogo Sasaki and Malaysia’s Naaveenesh Panicker on four each.

For Japan, this was the perfect response to Friday’s heartbreak. They drew 2-2 with Pakistan in the last pool game and missed the final only on goals scored, 18 to 16, after both sides finished level on points and goal difference. A team could have sulked about that. Japan went out and won a medal instead, and they did it against a Canada side they’d already beaten 8-1 in the tournament opener.

Canada finish fourth. Their week had one bright spot, the 3-2 win over China on Tuesday, but the rest of it was heavy going: 8-1 to Japan, 6-2 to Pakistan, 6-1 to Malaysia, and now 5-0 again. China finish fifth, without a win.

The tournament closes with Saturday night’s final between hosts Malaysia and Pakistan, the rematch of Wednesday’s 3-2 thriller.
