Hockey’s Big Week in Doha: Elections, an Awards Night, and One Vote That Matters
Most fans will never watch a congress. Fair enough. But the week hockey’s bosses are having in Doha right now decides an odd amount of what the sport looks like for the next four years, and it ends with the one night the players actually care about.
The FIH published the full programme today, Wednesday. The Executive Board meets today. Friday 23 October brings the National Associations Forum and, in the evening, the FIH Award Ceremony, where the Hockey Stars Awards 2026 winners finally get named. The 50th FIH Statutory Congress itself sits on Saturday 24 October, with a press conference straight after at 4:00 pm Doha time.
The date that changed
Quick correction worth making loudly, because half the hockey internet has it wrong: the awards are Friday night, not Saturday. Tom Boon, Justus Weigand and Tomi Domene find out who takes men’s Player of the Year on 23 October, on the eve of Congress, not during it. Our own awards preview said Saturday when it was written. It’s Friday. Plan your evening accordingly.
What’s actually on the table Saturday
Elections to the Executive Board are the headline item. President Tayyab Ikram gives his address and report. There’s a vote on the Lebanese Hockey Federation’s application to join the FIH, which sounds like paperwork until you remember every new member is another country where the game gets a foothold. And there’s a review of the FIH’s regulatory and judicial framework, the unglamorous machinery that decides how disputes, bans and appeals get handled.
Friday’s forum, meanwhile, talks about the IOC’s “Fit for the Future” initiative and a new FIH strategic framework. That’s the LA 2028 conversation, really. Hockey keeps its Olympic place by proving it still earns one, and everyone in that room knows it.
Ikram’s line ahead of the week was that the 50th Congress is “both a celebration of our journey and an important moment to define what comes next.” Politicianspeak, sure. But he’s not wrong about the timing. A World Cup year, an Olympic cycle tightening, and a sport arguing about its own future in one hotel in Doha.
Why you should care, briefly
Award winners Friday. Elections and a possible new member nation Saturday. Whatever shape world hockey takes into 2027 gets sketched this week, and we’ll have the Hockey Stars winners on SportsCursor the moment they’re announced on Friday night. More from the tournament world on our International Events page, and the world rankings the winners will be defending.
