Liga Iberdrola Round 5: Campo Put Five Past Terrassa, Junior Hit Six
Two away teams turned up in Spain this weekend and treated the place like they owned it.
Campo’s statement win
CD Terrassa 0-5 Club de Campo, on Saturday. That’s the result of the round and it isn’t close. Terrassa at home are a proper side in this league, and Campo, the defending champions, walked in and put five past them without reply. When the champions do that in October, the message is for everybody else: the title still goes through Madrid.
Sunday was about the travellers, too
Junior went to the Canary Islands and beat Taburiente 6-1, the longest trip in Spanish hockey producing the weekend’s biggest score. Complutense won the game of the round for pure entertainment, 4-2 at Egara, six goals and both sides going for it.
Elsewhere, Real Sociedad shut out Atlètic Terrassa 3-0 in San Sebastián, a bad weekend all round for the Terrassa clubs, Polo won 1-0 at Sardinero in Santander, and Tenis beat Valencia 2-1 in the closest game of the round.
Five rounds in, the pattern of Spanish women’s hockey holds: Campo set the standard, a chasing pack led by the likes of Junior and Complutense takes points off each other, and everybody else fights for the places below. The interest this season is whether anybody can actually stay with Campo over a full campaign. On Saturday’s evidence, that’s still an open question, and that’s being generous.
Round 5 results: CD Terrassa 0-5 Club de Campo (Sat 17 Oct); Egara 2-4 Complutense, Real Sociedad 3-0 Atlètic Terrassa, Sardinero 0-1 RC Polo, Taburiente 1-6 Junior, Tenis 2-1 Valencia (all Sun 18 Oct).
