Pakistan Hockey: Four World Cups, a Bronze Medal and the Long Road Back

Four World Cup titles made Pakistan hockey royalty. Nobody gets to take that away.

But the honest truth today is a team ranked 12th in the world, and SportsCursor won’t dress it up. Here’s where Pakistan stand: 12th in the FIH men’s rankings, on 2,561 points. That’s the reality. And yet October 2026 brought something Pakistan hockey has waited a long time for.

A medal, at last

At the Asian Games, Pakistan beat South Korea 5–3 on 3 October to take the bronze medal. The country’s first Asian Games hockey medal since 2014.

Sufyan Khan finished as the tournament’s joint top scorer with 12 goals. A medal, a star drag-flicker, and proof this team can still deliver when it matters. For our money, that bronze matters more than it looks: it gives a young side something solid to build on, instead of another hard-luck story.

The hard news

It came in the Pro League. Pakistan were relegated after the 2025–26 season, and the road back runs through the 2027 Nations Cup. Win that, and Pakistan return to the top table.

It’s a clear target, not a vague hope. That’s worth something on its own.

A league of their own

Off the field, the biggest structural move in decades landed on 14 October 2026, when the Pakistan Hockey League was formally launched in Islamabad. A franchise league: media rights held by Mediacast, 6–8 teams planned, foreign players alongside Pakistanis, and a first season in 2027.

If it delivers, Pakistan’s players finally get a professional home stage. That “if” is doing some heavy lifting, and everyone in Pakistan hockey knows it, but the intent alone marks a shift.

The juniors are carrying the flag right now

Pakistan’s U21s are 12th in the FIH junior world rankings and already qualified for the 2027 Junior World Cup. They’re in Johor Bahru for the Sultan of Johor Cup from 17–24 October, led by captain Muhammad Ammad. China first, then Canada, Malaysia and Japan.

Three roads back, then. The Nations Cup for the seniors. The PHL for the system. A junior generation already qualified for a World Cup. SportsCursor will walk every one of them, because Pakistan’s comeback is one of the great stories in the world game, and it starts here.
