Malaysia Hit Bangladesh for Six to Go Top of the Asian Champions Trophy
Three games, three wins, nine points. Malaysia are setting the pace at the Asian Champions Trophy after a 6-1 win over Bangladesh in Jalandhar on Friday.
It was the most comfortable win of their tournament so far. They had already beaten China 5-4 in a thriller on the opening day and South Korea 3-1 on Thursday. This one was never that tight. Bangladesh, who had already lost 13-0 to India and 1-0 to Japan, found themselves chasing the game again, and Malaysia kept finding ways through.
The numbers now tell the story of Malaysia’s week. Fourteen goals scored, six conceded, and a goal difference of plus eight. They are the first side to nine points, and they did it with two games still to play. For a team that finished as Asian Games runners-up to India, this is starting to look like a side that believes it can go all the way here, not just make up the numbers in the semi-finals.
Bangladesh’s tournament is going the other way, and the numbers are just as stark. One goal scored, twenty conceded, three defeats from three. They were always up against it as late replacements in this field, and the step up from their first two games to this one never really came. Their one consolation is that the games do not get any easier on paper, but they do get a fresh start on Sunday against South Korea, a side that went into Friday night still looking for its first points too.
What Malaysia have done is put real pressure on everyone else. India and Japan both went into Friday night on six points, and their meeting in the late game decides who stays on Malaysia’s shoulder. Whoever loses that one will be three points behind the leaders with two games left. Whoever wins it will still be three behind, because Malaysia have already banked their nine.
Malaysia’s own run-in is brutal, and that is what makes Friday’s win so valuable. They play India on Sunday night, then Japan on Monday. Two games against the other two unbeaten sides, back to back, to close the league stage. Win one of those and the semi-final spot is theirs beyond any doubt. Win both and they go to Mohali as the team nobody wants to draw.
For now, though, Friday belongs to Malaysia. Nine points, top of the table, and a goal difference that is only going to matter if things get tight at the end. Bangladesh, meanwhile, have Sunday to play for pride and for a first point of the tournament. That game against South Korea suddenly matters a lot to both sides.
