PHF Schools Hockey League: Big Plan, Tight Deadline, and Two Different Versions of the Details

Pakistan hockey’s next big idea is a schools league. The ambition is hard to fault. The details, though, don’t quite line up yet, and the clock is already ticking.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation held a consultative meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday 27 October to launch the Schools Hockey League, a nationwide competition meant to take hockey back into schools and rebuild the pipeline into the national teams. The meeting was chaired by PHF president Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani, who is also secretary of the Inter Provincial Coordination ministry, and it brought in school education and sports department representatives from all four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad.

The plan agreed at that meeting, as reported on 28 October, is this. Local rounds at tehsil, district and divisional level, all running at the same time, start on 15 November 2026. Provincial rounds follow in January 2027, and the national round in February 2027. The league will run under the PHF with its own chief executive and a steering committee chaired by the PHF president, with Ehtasham Anwar as the federation’s focal person. Players from the top three teams will get monthly stipends of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,500 and Rs 5,000 for a year. The winning team and selected players will get international tour opportunities, 100 boys and 100 girls a year will be picked for summer camps with coaching, fitness work and academic tutoring, and school heads and sports teachers who make the league work will get special awards.

That’s a serious package, and if it happens, it matters. Pakistan’s problem for years hasn’t been a lack of talent, it’s been a lack of structure between school hockey and the national setup. A league that finds players early, pays them a little, and keeps them in school while they train is exactly the kind of structure the sport has been missing.

But two things need sorting before anyone should mark 15 November in ink. First, an earlier version of the PHF plan, reported before the meeting, said something different: phase-one matches starting in December, national finals in January in Islamabad, stipends of Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 for at least two years, and a talent hunt aiming for 200 to 250 players a year. The dates and the money don’t match the post-meeting reports, and nobody has said which version is final. Second, less than three weeks from the announcement to the first matches is a very tight timetable for hundreds of tehsils, and the federation has not yet published how schools actually enter. Until there’s a registration route, the 15 November start is a plan, not a fixture list.

For our money, the idea deserves backing and the timetable deserves scrutiny. Schools hockey built Pakistan hockey once. Whether this league does it again will depend less on the launch meeting and more on whether grounds, umpires and entry forms are ready when November arrives.
