Japan v India: Unbeaten Against Unbeaten, With Top Spot on the Line
This is the game Friday night was made for. Japan against India, both unbeaten, both on six points, and the winner takes control of the Asian Champions Trophy table.
The game is at 6:30pm PKT at the Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar, the last match of Friday’s card. India go in top on goal difference, plus 16 to Japan’s plus two, after scoring 18 goals in two games. A draw keeps India top. A Japan win by any margin puts Japan top outright, with two rounds of games still to play. That’s the prize, and both teams know it.
Recent history says India, but not by as much as the goal difference suggests. India beat Japan 3-2 at the Asia Cup in Rajgir in August 2025, with Harmanpreet Singh scoring twice and Mandeep Singh once, and Japan’s Kosei Kawabe scoring twice at the other end. They met again at the Asian Games on 26 September 2026, and India won that one 2-0. Go back to the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy and India won 5-1. Three wins in a row for India, all of them competitive, none of them a walkover except the scoreline of the last one.
Japan’s case is built on organisation. They’ve conceded two goals in two games here: two against South Korea in a 3-2 opening win, none against Bangladesh in a 1-0 grind on Thursday. Kentaro Fukuda, Ryoma Ooka and Kazumasa Matsumoto scored on day one, captain Raiki Fujishima scored the winner from a penalty corner on day two. They don’t give much away, they don’t panic, and they have a set-piece threat of their own.
India’s case is built on firepower, and it’s hard to argue with 18 goals. Harmanpreet has four already, all from penalty corners, Mandeep has three, Sukhjeet scored twice against China on Thursday and was named hero of the match. The question for Friday is whether Japan’s structure can do what Bangladesh and China couldn’t: keep India quiet for long enough to make the game about one moment instead of five.
For our money, India are favourites, and rightly so. They’re at home, they’re scoring freely, and their penalty-corner battery is the best in the tournament. But Japan are exactly the kind of side that ruins a favourite’s week: disciplined, patient, and happy to win 1-0. If Japan score first, this becomes a very different evening.
Friday’s earlier games matter too. Bangladesh play Malaysia at 2:00pm PKT, and Korea play China at 4:15pm PKT in a game both sides have to win. Saturday is a rest day. The league stage finishes on 2 November, with the semi-finals in Mohali on 4 November.
